Lean Implementation
Simply to focus on getting the right things, to the right place at the right time in the right quantity to achieve perfect (or near perfect) workflow while minimizing waste and being flexible and adaptable for change. (We can thank Toyota for conceiving this concept.)
Production
Actively oversee the efficient movement of raw materials into production, to processing, to finished product and subsequently the movement of the finished product to the end result: consumer satisfaction. (To also understand your global markets which can have a tremendous influence on the timely flow of the entire process.)
Management
Biggest problems - poor arrangement of the workplace. Doing a job inefficiently out of habit. Major forms of waste. Spend more time coming up with ideas/solutions for efficiency rather than going back and forth. (Good farmer, bad farmer concept - Would you rather carry water by the bucket using more man power or spend the time and expense to irrigate your fields?)
Marketing
Fundamental to growth for any business is to maximize your marketing efforts by directing them to the smartest/correct channels of publication. You don't have to saturate the market. Be Smart. Do the homework to pinpoint your most effective areas. (Understand your demographics. Make yourself more familiar with your locale. On another note: Don't be afraid to think outside "your" box. Be creative.)
Sales
Take a more active and responsible role from the generation of a lead to the satisfied customer. Communication is essential. By paying closer attention to the entire process there is less chance for problems and the potential loss of someone 'dissatisfied'. Follow-up on orders and deliveries and be ready to troubleshoot potential problems.
Trucking
Be it company or contract trucking, the rise in fuel cost has effected a rise in product pricing. Poor coordination between sales orders, loading, to driver causes the most problems. Again, good communication changes everything. Adding satellite navigation systems can not only track drivers time/location, but help with possible reroutes. Once on the job site, educate the driver in knowing how to stage materials. Product placement is imperative. It can save time and money for everyone involved.
Employees
'Engage' your workplace. Allow employees to become fully involved and enthusiastic about their work. Educate and empower your employees to reflect the desired image of the employer. Friendly competitions or incentives, whether they be regular or occasional, can help in this area. (Allow your people to shine.)
Balance
Another area which is so prevalent in the workplace today is understanding our environments, community and our economy, a sort of "synergy" and what sustainability really means. Companies not only need to be concerned with 'lean' but 'green' as well. In Arizona, businesses had no choice but to find even the smallest ways to implement different business practices. (Water conservation is extremely big out here.)
The ideas I've shared are nothing new, just good principles to maintaining good structure.
